Madoka Magica, despite SEEMINGLY being cutesy and annoying at the beginning, gets dark as hell three episodes in. Highly recommend. Was pleasantly surprised by this one.
I'm going to vouch for this one too, now that I've finally given it a chance. DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY THE CUTESY CHARACTERS AND PASTEL COLOR PALETTE. There's some very heavy stuff happening here, excellent twists, and the most unique art and animation I've ever seen. I haven't quite finished the series, but so far it is air tight. The last few shows I've watched had terrible endings, so I'm really hoping this one sticks the dismount. [-O<
I dunno, Sailor Moon was my earliest exposure to the whole magical girl steez, and I found it so insipid. I've always steered clear of anything that looked like it shared that DNA.
lol @Daraius, that was my first constant exposure after Card Captor Sakura (CCS). To be fair, sometimes those poofy kid shows have FANTASTIC spin offs.
WAY too developed to really review beyond shoving you all in the proper direction to WATCH it. The original season isn't on Funimation, but if you can find it, it's a beautiful anime about a many attempting to assist a long time childhood friend regain her memories scattered across different 'planes' of existence (think like.. that old 90s show 'Sliders').
This anime is about a boy accepted to a school for monsters, unknowingly. He had poor grades, so it was the only option. When he went, he met Moka (long pink hair) and stayed because of her. It's a great anime imho, but didn't make it past the second season in Japan. It has a manga, though, that was really good to make up for it! 5 stars for this one.
It starts slow. It's about a school club wanting to build a giant robot, but also has undertones about the end of the world and a lot of humor about 'chatspeak' when characters literally speak 'internet' ex "lol" "ttyl" "wtf" "nsfw" etc etc. Very cute. 3 stars since I haven't finished it yet
Not a huge fan of this remix of the opening song, but this anime is essentially your average teenagers powering robots with a bunch of twists. The one with short white hair as well as the one with long wavy hair actually aren't from earth, but from two opposing worlds. Madoka is the one with shoulder-length hair, and is the sole member of the Jersey Club which has only the purpose to help others out. One day, she is approached by an alien named Lan (short white hair) from the planet Le Garite who asks her to pilot a robotic aircraft to defend mankind against an evil force.. It develops nicely overall. Four stars.
It's about a VR game that involves wearing a helmet of sorts. Upon it's release, all of the players are locked in and unable to log out. Attempts to remove these helmets are essentially a way to kill it's wearer, instantly. The only way to be released and 'win' is to beat the final level. Think.. trying to fight Estarra. Kirito is a solo player that doesn't want to and prefers not to group, but suddenly has no choice. I give it 5 stars lol

All joking aside, the magical girls genre has quite a few gems that make fun of the genre, and have also a couple of epochal ones that have marked major shifts in the way the genre has been seen and subsequently made. You really need to have quite a few of them under your belt to tell the difference, though...
I did really enjoy Cute High blah blah LOVE. I watched that one right on the heels of Erased for maximum emotional whiplash. So I guess the by-the-book magical girl genre isn't for me (which makes sense, because I've never been in the target demographic for those shows), but I'll take a lampooning or subversion or thoughtful reimagination of the genre any day of the week. Ditto for giant robots.
OMG... Boueibu love is getting a sequel and Symphogear is getting a fourth season.
It's not really magical girl maybe more sentai but Gatchaman Crowds was pretty amazing, and well I have to mention Owari no Seraph (mostly because I can google gay vampire anime and it comes straight up) bit slow but interesting.

The visuals are really interesting, too--I've never seen anything like them. I also love the way they chose to organize time and events; gives it a dark, ominous tone.

Trigger fans should be, and you probably already are, watching Space Patrol. It's 7 minutes of crazy fan service (more in the traditional sense rather than the current "boobs, thighs, butts, and lolis") and a great ED.
I'm binging a few series this week/weekend (Joker's Game, Re:Zero, Ushio) to catch up. I'm keeping Flying Witch on the back burner for a day when I want something just super duper comfy. The only thing I've stayed caught up with is Diamond is Unbreakable, because JoJo will always just be fabulous.

Animation Little Witch Academia On Netflix. Lovely animation. Mawaru Penguindrum If you liked Revolutionary Girl Utena, try this weirdness. Co-written and directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara.
Manga Otoyomegatari (lit. Bride's Story) Historical jousei manga by Kaoru Mori. Most of it was set in Turkic Central Asia. She gives lovely renderings of life there. One book was set in Persia with different characters. Natsume Yuujinchou I like manga-ka Yuki Midorikawa and love the melancholy mood she creates in her works. I first read her Hotarubi no Mori e. Sengoku Strays A shounen manga with a female protagonist, a kendo enthusiast, traveling back in time to the Sengoku era to kick butt alongside Oda Nobunaga's men.
I'm not much of one for anime, but here are my favorite mangas! (There are anime adaptations, but I don't know how good those are.)
Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (Assassination Classroom) : Coming of age and Teaching story, told through assassination. Kekkaishi : Fantastic magic, and commentary on the use/danger of power. Plenty of action, magic, and fantastic creatures. Nurarihyon no Mago: Another coming of age story, about inheriting legacies and how to treat the antiquated traditions of one's ancestors. Also, lots of youkai (Japanese monsters) and swordfighting. Konjiki no Gash Bell: About monster children fighting each other to decide who becomes king. A lot like One Piece in flavor, if less silly. One Punch Man: About a superhero who's so strong that he can defeat any enemy with one punch. Really awesome fights as well as deep introspection.
Ouran High School Host Club: Comedy and romance, about a girl who is mistaken for a boy and thus conscripted into being a male escort at a rich private school. Black Cat: Lots of gun-fu, deep story, and how to move on after death. Also, has cute and funny moments Liar Game: Psychological thriller, about people who play deeply psychological games and have to win or go into millions of dollars of debt. (turned into live action, not anime) Shokugeki no Soma: Really great story that goes into the depths of cooking and has lots of conflict with realistic stakes. REALLY GOOD! Also, deeply technical while entertaining. Baby Steps: Tennis manga that is soooo much better than Prince of Tennis. It goes into what makes a good tennis player, and the main character is really relatable. Pretty technical with no "super tennis" (no balls splitting in two, slowing down time, clouds of misty sweat, etc.)
Also, Tower of God is a Korean webtoon that has no anime adaptation, but is the best thing ever! If you read/watch nothing else, read this.
I'm not really a big anime watcher but I've been really into Mob Psycho 100 this season and didn't see it mentioned when looking through the thread.
It's from the same author as One-Punch Man and is also about a character with terrifyingly overwhelming power. He has a very different relationship with his power and the world around him than OPM does though. I love the characterization and the humor of it.

I watched an episode of Hunter x Hunter to research a character for a cake I had to do... Then I watched like a hundred more episodes because the sheer variety of stupid character models and ever escalating powers is gonzo. There's even a "real life RPG" arc, because that hasn't been done enough in anime. High art it ain't, but I can't stop watching. Killua's constant wardrobe changes may be the best thing.
I love Cowboy Bebop, yes. That opening sequence is pretty iconic.
