Speedwalking Landmarks

We're starting to add speedwalking landmarks to cities and communes. You'll only see them if you are in the city or commune and a member of that org. We are also including a few that are guild-only (i.e., speedwalk to your guild).

So far, we've enabled Magnagora only. If you have suggestions for your own org, feel free to let us know here! Keep in mind this is primarily to help new players move around (though they can be helpful to anyone!).

For the record, this is SUPER helpful. I remember being new and struggling on nexus, even with directions in scrolls. This is great for new players who don't have fancy mappers, and it's cleaner than reading directions scrolls and the like. Big thumbs up! (man it would have saved me some wandering when I was new)

  • Suggestion: if you're standing in a landmark room, you can reach landmarks up to 100 rooms away. Some villages (Rikenfriez comes to mind, plus the UV villages, I think) are more than 50 rooms away from other landmarks, and it's kind of difficult to get to for the new guy.
If it's broken, break it some more.
  • For Glom:

Master - Before the Master Ravenwood Tree (1337)
Wyrdaltar - The altar to the Wyrd (18342)
Drums - Meshwork of plants (1317)
Wyrdstables - The Stables of the Wyrden Thorn (17177)
Shadowvale - Grotto of Preparation (10919)
Shadowmaze - Arched entrance to the Shadowmaze (13956)
??? - A branch in a subterranean tunnel (7722) (connects to shops and gambling)
Blacktower - Inside the Black Tower (1427)
Darkhammer - The Forge of the Darkhammer (7809)
           Shadowfeast - Shadowfeast Kitchens (7806)
Glitteringweb - The Glittering Web (7808)
Raventhreads - The Threads of the Raven (7807)
         Wyrdpentagram - A dimly-lit enchantment workshop (17991)
            Laboratory - Mystic laboratory (1431)
         Arcanelibrary - Arcane Library (1430)
Nightchamber - Chamber of Night (1433)

  • I can't approve of this more!  This is a great idea!

The problem with expanding the distance is it creates an even larger processor draw. I've not looked at how it's coded, but I presume it's much the same as everything else of this nature. The bigger the radius the much, much bigger the draw.
  • There's the solution of pre-calculating paths between landmarks though. So every (major) landmark has a stored path to every other (major) landmark. With major, I mean the non-org-based ones (i.e. the ones everyone has access to).
    image
  • Or, something that I'd rather see: Setting your own paths. So PATH USE <list of dirs> would allow you to set your own path of length 5, 10, 50, 100 or more. There'd probably have to be some limit though, of course (so no storing a path that's a thousand steps long), but it'd remove the processor from the equation.

Is there a way to have them not go through specific areas? Like if the walker sends a newbie through the blasted lands it's almost certainly a death sentence.

With a gate from the city to that area I can see quite a few newbies coming home from their triumphant hunting or questing only to be murdered by the fancy path system.

Being able.to tell it to exclude certain areas from the path would be great (and I would expect that to decrease processor usage, if room is in a restricted area go no further up that path).

Then default certain areas to restricted (Blasted Lands, the seas with their waves, villages, and so on).

Might be more database storage per person, but could just make it only store if the user specifically sets the flag, otherwise it uses the global default. Also could limit it only to certain problem areas that can be so restricted, to make it an easier project.

  • Yessssssss! Thank you so much! :D
  • How possible would it be to allow people to set their own landmarks? Let's say I want one at Trader Bob, for instance; I'd just go to him and use LANDMARK HERE BOB to create a new landmark called "Bob" that worked like other landmarks.

SETALIAS GOBOB PATH WALK <Bob's Vnum>

Everiine said: The reason population is low isn't because there are too many orgs. It's because so many facets of the game are outright broken and protected by those who benefit from it being that way. An overabundance of gimmicks (including game-breaking ones), artifacts that destroy any concept of balance, blatant pay-to-win features, and an obsession with convenience that makes few things actually worthwhile all contribute to the game's sad decline.
  • Out of curiosity, how do you get a vnum for a room?  Is the only way from the ingame mapper or is there some command I don't know?
  • EnyalidaEnyalida Nasty Woman, Sockpuppeteer to the Gods
    It also shows in gmcp.
