But...I didn't lie once either and you thought I was scum? Not all 'facts' are proven facts in a game like this. So much subterfuge and uncertainty and multiple possible explanations. Clearly you are a far more experienced mafia player than I if you can be so certain. I was second-guessing everyone and everything all the time.

Anyway. Just refuting the 'always right' claim. That's all.

I just have to rave btw @sylandra, your flavour text was awesome. You all missed it but night one the guards escorted me and I was all haughty and expecting them of course, teehee. I loved reading the end of night/day posts!

  • VivetVivet , of Cows and Crystals
Insomnia's getting to me tonight and I can't get sleep, so since Synkarin's getting his dues I want to take a moment to say "nope" and give the limelight back to Allyrianne.

She did a very good job of playing up at being town while mostly staying on the periphery. Honestly, if I was still playing the game I'd probably have trusted her entirely. It was only as a spectator that I looked at her and said, "You know, she's looking so trustworthy to me, wouldn't it be great if she turned out to be scum?" - And that is what blossomed into me hoping she was Queen Elizabeth, with my suspicions slowly being confirmed and the only thing left to puzzle me was Ssaliss claiming she was Catholic (which just made me think Ssaliss was scum too).

Ssaliss being the only pure-historic role was a distinct point of difficulty too, and combined with his Naive Cop made him another pseudo-miller. I'm undecided if the most difficult role was his or Kiradawea's. I'd have had a bad time with either of those too.

  • UshaaraUshaara Schrödinger's Traitor
I actually thought Ssaliss was Elizabeth and Allyrianne was a solo arsonist Lola, looking to put a crown on her baby's head. I believed her Lola claim since my flavour rolesheet specifically made mention of doubts around whether Mary and Francis could have a child :D

But yes, Sylandra set up a great game, show would be 100% more entertaining if it played out like it did here.

I'm jealous of all the people who had night messages, I only got them on the penultimate and final night.

    Praying for Forgiveness
As the cloak of night draws fast upon you, you retire to a very different part of the catacombs - that where Mary, Queen of Scots, used to reside. Kneeling there, you look up to the Lord Almighty, who--after all this time, you still have not forsaken--and whisper your penitence for whatever culpability you've had in your dearly departed wife's death.

    Noticing Arson Prep
As you leave your room to rejoin the nobles at court once more, you cannot help but notice something is different. It takes you a moment to place exactly what it is - the scent of a fresh-cut rose. Though you investigate the source of the perfume, none can be found; bewildered, you return your attentions to the political intrigue of the day.

    Dying
You are rudely awakened from your slumber by a crowd of fearsome guards. One yanks you by the collar of your shirt to ram you against the wall, and as he does so you begin to piece together what is happening: the crimson and gold colour of their armour, the Tudor rose stamped on their chest... these are English guardsmen from the siege above.

And somehow, they knew precisely where to find you.

The distinct smell of the fresh-cut rose from the other day flashes back into your mind, but only for a moment as you are rammed against the wall once more.

"Filthy French brat," one spits, drawing a blade as the others do likewise, preparing to skewer here in the catacombs like a common criminal.

You have two options on how to face the final moments of your life: to watch these men kill you, or to close your eyes and think of Mary. So you think of Mary, your beloved wife, and how you shall see her all too soon...

The blade lops your head from your body, and you are finally at peace.

You have been killed and can no longer take part in the dayphase or nightphase of the game.

  • LavinyaLavinya Queen of Snark Australia
    • You hold your head high as King Henry II's guards approach you, flippantly commenting that you were expecting them. They genuflect in answer before leading you to the dungeon, where you patiently wait in quiet dignity until daybreak arrives and they escort you back.

    • You hear the guardsmen approach Silvanus's chambers before you see them.

Fortunately for you, being a royal mistress has taught you how to be seen, or unseen, when necessary. You fling yourself against the stone walls, stifling your breathing as you watch the onslaught of one, two, three--how many men could possibly be here?--confront your love with drawn blades. Silvanus, not to be taken easily, tackles one man to the floor only to have another stab him in the back. The men laugh mockingly as he stumbles to the ground, now an easy target for hungry blades to consume.

You cover your mouth in shock as you watch them cut your beloved to pieces upon the ground. You want to throw up, but cannot. What a disaster it would be, to be noticed and to invite their wrath upon you too.

Your mind begins to spin restlessly, seeking answers.

King Henry II is dead. That is indisputable. What does this mean for you? Dauphin Francis shall ascend to the throne, if he lives, and if not, then his mother, Catherine de Medici shall serve as regent. Catherine, who has despised you all these years, and surely poisoned her own children against you.

Your blood turns cold. You have served France all these years, but without Henry, who in France will serve you?

There is an alternative, though it sickens you to even consider it. Survival however creates strange bedfellows, and who knows more about strange bedfellows than you? When the guards depart the dead king's chambers, you follow them, knowing very well where they will you lead you.

"Queen Elizabeth," you say, your voice collected despite the way your body shakes and trembles. "I come to serve you in your just bid for the throne of England." She raises an eyebrow at you as you curtsey--yes, you curtsey for this woman who ordered the death of your one true love. This is only practical, you tell yourself. This is politics. Far better Elizabeth than Catherine. Far better a Tudor over a de Medici in your bed.

Elizabeth nods, once. You kiss her ring in subservience. With that, you banish fancies about returning to France from your mind and make your deal with the devil.

You have officially joined the side of the English Mafia. As you were born in France, and remain a Catholic, neither of these descriptors will change for you. You may now speak and conspire with the English Mafia at night.

You no longer win with France. You now win when all threats to Elizabeth's rule are eliminated.
No idea how I super broke that. Anyway, my night one text and final night (the only night messages I got too!)

I was going to let Sylandra do the honours, but if you all are already starting the trend then I guess I'll go along with it.

    First Night

Curtseying as she enters, your flustered maid stammers out that she has discovered that Othero's livery is Navarran. Uncertain as to what that means, you are left to contemplate what you've just learned as the first rays of dawn break through the catacombs.

Flavour text here could not have been more accurate. I HATED THE NEXT DAY SO MUCH.

    Second Night

Your maid rushes in without curtsey or preamble, blurting that she is certain that Synkarin wears a British signet ring!

And then of course I get this. Well, clearly I have to do something now, right? One of these guys has to be scum, if not both. But then it turns out like...

    Third Night

  • VivetVivet , of Cows and Crystals
When you hear the patter of footsteps approaching you, with a sinking feeling you discern that they aren't those of your loyal maid. No, these footsteps are louder, duller, each thud causing your heart to beat like a battering ram in your chest. Still, you are a queen. You turn to coolly face your attacker with what shred of dignity you have left. In the darkness, all you can make out is their mask gleaming in the faint moonlight.

"Fancy meeting you here, your Highness," the cloaked figure says with a smirk. "We made a promise with your mother that we don't intend to break. We promised," the figure continues, "that she'd see you shortly."

For a moment you try to run. It's futile, but at least you tried--that is what you tell yourself as your attacker tackles you to the ground, pouring a putrid vial of poison down your throat. With no choice, you choke it down.

"Long may you reign," the assassin says with a cruel laugh, and with that they're gone, leaving you convulsing upon the floor. You gag and sputter, foaming at the mouth, reaching for something, anything to save you, but it's too late...

You have been killed, and can no longer take part in the dayphase or nightphase of the game.

No idea why the last one broke. Or why this text changed. Forums, you are terrible.

  • [HIDDEN SKILL: The Pope is a fallible Naive Cop! All completed religious investigations will return Catholic. This will be revealed upon his death.]

^I lol'd. Best use of naive cop ever.

  • Actually, blocking or jailing me that last night would only have killed the person attempting it, thanks to the power I got when Synkarin went down, since no one had tripped it yet. Jailing Ushaara (protecting him from the arson) might have saved the town, although it would have depended on the outcomes of the next day/night. I had no idea Lavinya was going to flip when I took out Silvanus, but I was hoping that something would, or that Celina was lying about being out of poison, would try to kill me, and die from my guard. (Welcome to the winning team, Lavinya! I'm glad I didn't kill you after all)

I was so confused about what was up with Ssaliss after he declared me Catholic. I was pretty convinced he was some third party scum trying to keep the mafia in play until his win condition was fulfilled.

We didn't kill Silvanus sooner (despite being pretty sure who he was after day 2) because at first we were mainly gunning for Mary due to the way our flavour/win condition was phrased, and then there was the investigator/watcher to take out. Also I was vaguely paranoid that killing the king wouldn't necessarily be in our best interests. I'm very curious to see how else the game could have been played out.

I had so much fun with this game. I really enjoyed the flavour, Sylandra did an amazing job with setting the tone, and that last day was intense.

Vivet really scared me, hitting two out of the three mafia on her first two nights. I was doing my best to play up the "Clarissa is pretty shady in the show" without raising the question of why Kiradawea would claim her in that case. Also from the show synopses, Chirbo's character is soooo not mafia, but as a protestant he was too good of a scapegoat to pass up.

I had a few different ideas about admitting to being the roses while trying to pretend they were some sort of memorial for Mary power that I got after her death, but after Ushaara first identified them with the tudor rose and then second suggested the arsonist power, I decided it wasn't worth the risk.

I'm not sure the game was so much imbalanced in favour of scum, as just... impossible to balance because it could go in so many directions. It was fun though. I really had a blast.
  • I have to give credit to Synkarin and Othero too. I really thought we'd lost Synkarin the day before we actually did, and even after that he almost made it another day. It was a really impressive performance. Othero did a good job of lying low, and then convincing people of his survivor claim, and the bomb/janitor combo was a nice puzzle. It was a good team.

I'd love to see @Yarith's visions if we're sharing flavour text. Here's mine, if people are curious.

    Night One
You pocket a vial of poisons in your cloak before stealing away to where you saw Lavinya sleep for the night. To your surprise, however, you see no one there. With the dawn fast approaching, you retreat once more to your dwelling, feeling vaguely irritated at a wasted night.

    Night Two
You pocket a vial of poisons in your cloak before stealing away to where you saw Luce sleep for the night. She has just finished dismissing her maid when you approach her from behind, the casual tilt of her head suggesting that she doesn't yet view you as a threat. "Jehenne?" she calls out, once, and that is all she manages before you violently grab her. Just as she begins to scream, you pour a disturbingly putrid vial of poison down her throat. With no other choice, she chokes it down.

"Don't worry, your Highness. Your sweet daughter will join you shortly," you whisper with cruel delight, and with that you're gone, leaving Marie de Guise, Queen Regent of Scotland dead upon the floor.

    Night Three
You kneel down, pressing your hands together in pious prayer as you fervently bid the Lord assist you in your just cause for the throne of England. As your lips mouth words of devotion, you sense a distinct change in the air this night, as if to say that your words have been heeded.

    Night Four
It's best you choose something inoffensive to alert your guards on where to strike, without drawing too much attention from the foolish French nobles around you. It strikes you in a moment of genius - of course, who would notice the scent of a Tudor rose? You slip into Silvanus's dwelling unnoticed and tuck a red rose without a small cranny nearby, hiding it so that only its perfume is noticeable. When you are ready to strike, the guards will know precisely where to find Silvanus.

    Night Five
You slip into Ushaara's dwelling and, at first, are stunned by the lack of Ushaara's presence there. Normally this would be an irritating thing, as you'd be trying to kill the man, but this time it works well enough in your favour. You remove the Tudor rose from your personage and slip it into a crack within the walls, tucking it in gently so that only its perfume is noticeable. When you are ready to strike, the guards will know precisely where to find Ushaara.

    Night Six

You're just about done humoring these foppish Frenchmen.

It's a pity that it took so many bodies to achieve anything of note, but well, that's politics for you. You ascend out of the catacombs to meet with your English forces, who curtsey before you with the respect you've only recently become unaccustomed to.

"Kill them," you say coolly, dropping a single Tudor rose upon the ground. "All the ones I've marked with the Tudor rose are of special interest to me. Bring me their heads."

Your guards do not need to be told twice. They split into two forces, one to focus upon Silvanus and the other upon Ushaara. They promise you that they shall succeed.

Once more, you retreat to your lair in the catacombs, leaning back with a leisurely smile upon a makeshift stone throne. Soon it will be a real one, giilded with gold and gemstones. France has been fun, but England will be ever so much lovelier, won't it? You miss having a proper kettle of tea, and the fanfare a royal ought to receive upon her entrance.

Still, the screams will serenade you beautifully enough tonight.

The first batch of guards to return to you is the set that murdered Ushaara, and to your delight, they bring you the head of Dauphin Francis of France on a silver platter. "And what of the other?" you ask, patient yet with a threat gleaming in your eyes. At that, the next legion of guards steps forward, this time bearing the head of Silvanus, King Henry II of France, which stares at you through one good eye; the other, amusingly enough, has been impaled.

"Did the king's mistress give you any trouble?" you ask matter-of-factly, and to your surprise you see a beautiful woman follow the guards into your chambers. You recognize her as Lavinya, though in the light she is clearly revealed to be Diane de Poitiers, the now-deceased King's royal mistress.

"Queen Elizabeth," Lavinya says, her voice collected in a studied, reasoned manner. "I come to serve you in your just bid for the throne of England." You raise an eyebrow at her as she curtseys--yes, she curtseys for you, knowing fully well that you are the one who assassinated her one true love. Yet in a way, it's not a surprising move. She's chosen you over Catherine de Medici and her children, knowing that your hatred does not extend to her in the way that Catherine's always will. What's that quaint phrasing again? "Far better a Tudor over a de Medici in your bed."

So you nod, once. She kisses your ring in subservience. With that, Lavinya joins you as a member of the English Mafia, winning when all threats to your rule are eliminated.
  • VivetVivet , of Cows and Crystals

I'm not sure the game was so much imbalanced in favour of scum, as just... impossible to balance because it could go in so many directions. It was fun though. I really had a blast.
This is why I really want to see the other faction possibilities, yeah.

I think the biggest irony is that Mary being the effective investigator actually makes her rather weak. The nature of the role presents you with a huge incentive to not claim, but then gives you a power that's basically going to force you to claim if everyone else is (I hated seeing Lavinya and Kiradawea just nameclaim so freely). All the other towns don't necessarily see that issue the same way as you do when you are Mary. I feel like Mary may have actually been better off as just vanilla.

With this setup, it means that it is not good enough for Mary to simply find scum - if she wants to win, it is necessary to find Elizabeth first, then ensure she gets immediately lynched. Pure diceroll.

@Allyrianne Haha, I don't know if I would have connected the dots between the rose and arsonist, only for you pointing out that Silvanus had also noticed it. I had completely missed that, Lavinya didn't seem to recall it either, and I was on the verge of thinking that I had misinterpreted it as a night action and that it was some weird after prayer effect to symbolise Mary's forgiveness.

That Protestant's Prayer changing the air though, feck that, I couldn't be 100% sure of Tekora because of it..

Probably one of the most fun and confusing games I've played. Awesome job, @Sylandra.

I think the powers were definitely rough on the town, especially our special needs pope. He really threw me through a loop.  Ssaliss is always smart, cool, and level headed, but you could tell his patience was starting to crack with Tekora which is why I started doubting my original suspicion that he was maifa. I got the definite impression that he was getting irritated because Tekora was going off the rails and he was just being frank and honest, which is why I unvoted him. The pope role is still out of left field for me, but I should have known Ssaliss better. That role was way too suspicious for him to claim it without good reason (the reason being it was his role).

Allyrianne played so well, I must say. Completely under the radar for most of the game, though our special pope really helped her cause. I think she had a lot of us eating out of her hand when she started discussing Silvanus's role in his defense against Tekora. The moment she cast the second vote for Tekora I went "DAMN IT, she got us."

I had a terrible game. I messed up a few times and followed a few rabbit holes I probably shouldn't have. My plan worked on Othero at least! Small victories.

What I learned from this game is that players that go off the rails should probably be lynched early, as they prove to be enormous distractions for the town. I think the mafia's biggest ally in this game was definitely Tekora, we spent so much time trying to make heads or tails of Tekora's allegations and challenges.

edit: I'm also 98% sure Sylandra gave me Catherine on purpose, based on the flavor of the messages. They were hilarious.

  • It's pretty interesting to me to look back at all the night actions, particularly to see what Luce and Yarith were up to. It looks like it's a good thing we milked Synkarin for his investigator ability while we could! And it's bad luck for the town that Luce got offed so quickly. (I really enjoyed your posts, @Luce).

    My nights!

    Survived nightkill
As always, you sleep with one eye open. So when you hear the ragged breathing of a creature behind you, and feel their hands fasten themselves upon your neck, you react quickly. "You're not my first assassin, child," you spit as you whirl about to face your attacker; in the darkness, all you can see is their eerie white mask staring back at you. You take their moment of surprise to slap your attacker soundly across the face, enraging them; as they lunge forward, you take the opportunity to dart within the depths of the labyrinth, leaving them to stumble forward and scream in frustration as you depart. You survive, as you always do, another day.

    Othero roleblocking me

You find yourself excruciatingly bored all night until a handsome noble sidles up to you, smoothly engaging you in conversation. It's not as if you had anything better to do anyway, so you humor him for a time, let him flirt and compliment you as you surely deserve, and then part at daybreak. It wasn't the most eventful night, but then again, it's more eventful than you'd planned it would be, wouldn't it?

    Killing Shaddus

Your heart beating wildly with excitement--(Good Lord, how dull has listening to the prattle of the past few days been? Honestly, you needed this)--you slip into Shaddus's corner of the catacombs with no resistance. You blend into the shadows easily as he turns, oblivious. He's larger than you, but that's no matter. You have the element of surprise on your side.

"Shaddus," you say, smiling in a gesture of good will as you step forward. "Dreadful siege, isn't it? English and all that."

He relaxes visibly when he sees it's you who's approached. He nods.

"Let's have a toast together, the two of us. It'll be nice to forget everything for awhile, won't it?" You smile thinly and offer a bottle of contraband wine forward, dark with poison. At his hesitation, you drink it yourself as if to prove the innocence of your intentions. The familiar bite of iocane powder lingers on your tongue, rendered useless by years of building up an immunity to that particular drug.

The fool no longer questions your motives as he drinks it down. A moment too late he registers what you've done as he grabs at his throat, shaking and convulsing as he falls to the ground. Though he tries to scream your name, it's all for nothing. He's barely making sounds at all.

"Au revoir," you say airily as you walk away, leaving the corpse of the Duke of Guise behind you.

Silvanus locking me in a dungeon

You are minding your own business, praying a last-minute prayer to the Lord to forgive you for murdering Shaddus and all that, when several guards accost you from out of nowhere. "Do you know who I am?!" you bark at them, but they don't seem to care as they throw you into the dungeon.

Oh well. The change of scenery might do you good anyhow. It's not like you had any other plans for the night, did you?

We had a good scum team for sure. I can't help but make posts and comments, so Othero and Allyrianne were able to balance us out well by flying low. They both played brilliantly, I really liked the janitor/bomb combo, that was such a pro-move. I was worried for Allyrianne because I swore they would realize that she's one of the few left not confirmed, but her Lola claim was pure genius. I think it gave her enough reasonable doubt to slip by while Tekora had tunnelvision on Ssaliss. Not to mention that Tekora turned off Silvanus so much that he decided it was better to lynch him, win or lose.

While Tekora may have claimed to have this grand plan to offset the scum, alienating the fellow townies certainly didn't help in the long run.

This was a great mafia game, I don't really have comments on balance, I didn't think it was crazy (though I died before the extra powers came in, so who knows). I also have the benefit of being on the mafia, which intrinsically has more facts from the getgo.

That final day was a glorious mayhem.

I was about to vote Ssaliss, then decided to hold off for a bit longer. Allyrianne posted about Silvanus noticing a rose scent, I was still undecided between Allyrianne and Lavinya, thinking having a mafia as part of a Mason pair with the king would be extremely sneaky. But then Allyrianne flimsy claimed that I might be leading everyone on, which confirmed her guilt for me. Then all the simultaneous posting of me voting Ally, Silvanus condemning Tekora and Ally sniping for the win happened.

    So much fun.

I didn't claim a name because 1) I couldn't find a name to claim on the wiki right away (and to be honest, I didn't even consider claiming to be female, I was looking for guys) and 2) It got to the point where claiming a name would have probably been suspicious and it was better to stick to my guns and not claim. Even when Ushaara gave me a way out, I almost took it but thought that my best move was to stay strong.

It was really only a matter of time at that point anyway, so my goal was to string it out as long as possible.

You know, when you first accused Tekora, for a while I thought he could actually be Robert Dudley, and that you were  William or someone else. If Tekora was in the mafia, it would have been a really brilliant move - then if either of you got lynched, it would help out the other and make them look more convincing. But then when you died and came up as Robert Dudley, I had to throw up my hands and say "Well, he's gone and confimed Tekora as town now. Surely they'll stop fussing over Tekora."

And then the rest of the game happened and I was cackling with Sylandra at the end with the Condemnation thing.

  • CyndarinCyndarin used Flamethrower! It was super effective.
I took a huge gamble with Shaddus.

I was either going to be a hero and it would be awesome, OR people would shrug it off and go "Celina killed someone? That sounds normal."

Trying to discredit me now doesn't change the fact that lynching Ssaliss, night-blocking Allyrianne and then lynching Ally would have been a perfectly safe Town win.

The reality is, not once did I lie during this game. Your distrust of me was based solely on my playstyle. Looking forward to future games, you (and most of the other players in this game) would do well to realize that it never ends well when you vote with your instinct over cold, hard facts.
Such as your continual hounding over me being the Pope, instead of smelling the roses (literally) and figuring out that someone else definitely lied?

Anyway, it was an awesome game! I have to admit I was starting to doubt my own role a bit after Othero's disappearance and Allyrianne being far too suspicious despite being Catholic (in my mind). I think I even made a post mentioning that the whole religion thing might've been one giant red herring; not too far from the truth, in the end! Me being a naive cop also solved the mystery about why we'd have two investigators, when that'd be clearly OP if both always reveal scum.

I also for the briefest moment considered that I might be completely insane, and not actually be the Pope at all; my actual role would be some village madman who thinks he's the Pope.

Trying to discredit me now doesn't change the fact that lynching Ssaliss, night-blocking Allyrianne and then lynching Ally would have been a perfectly safe Town win.
Lynching Allyrianne right away instead would've been an even safer win. Just saying.
Lynching me at that point, would have given town the win. Tekora's plan would have resulted in me winning no matter who Silvanus jailed.

Credit to you, Ssaliss, you definitely got handed a very tough role.
