Show me your paintings! Here is the one I just finished making for Mysrai, it's Zoku's interpretation of their meeting.

The Urchin and the Phoenix

Centered upon the black canvas is a bright blob. The ambiguous blob faintly resembles that of a phoenix, the details of talons and crudely drawn waves of fire behind it giving it definition. Around the phoenix, making a loose circle are many vaguely human white figures. They all appear to be holding hands as They circle the phoenix, musical notes drawn above their heads to show They sing. Three small question marks lie above the young fire bird's head, grey in color, the shade looking like a mix between the black backdrop and the color of the ethereal Children. At the feet of the Children are flower petals, kicking up behind each of the Children's feet as They are depicted skipping around the phoenix. Written on the bottom, in sky blue text are the words, "The Urchin and the Phoenix" and below that is the signature of the artist, a overly large "Z" with "oku" sitting by the bottom angle and stretching to the end of the z.

I made a bunch for the last Bloodfaire but I only have copies of these two. If anyone has any of the others I would really appreciate it!

    The Divine Pantheon of Magnagora

Austere and intricately worked, this oil portrait portrays the four Divine whom call Magnagora home. Lord Fain stands central, depicted in flowing robes of stygian; His Crimson Masque twisted into a sadistic smirk. From one cruel hand dangles a marionette on strings, dancing to its master's tune. Standing to His side is The Enchantress, a vision of aesthetic perfection draped in an exquisite gown of lavender that sets Her eyes alight and enhances the allure of her small smile. In the sky above Her hovers a tiny nightingale, slowly swooping towards Her upraised Hand. Next is Lord Raezon to one side, enshrouded in a scholarly set of blue robes, His expression cool. He cradles a heavy, ancient tome beneath one arm, an argent pentacle embossed on its cover. On the opposite side of the portrait stands He Who is Legion, clad in an aristocratic charcoal suit and His features hard and malevolent. Twining around one forearm is a serpent of jade and black, curling about to bite its own tail.

    The Great d'Murani Warlord

Austere and imposing, this portrait has been painted with meticulous detail of the great Warlord, Silvanus d'Murani. A shadowy cloak shrouds much of his gaunt figure, the deep hood doing little to hide the nobility of his features. His shoulders are hunched and yet his bearing is regal, erubescent eyes blazing dispassionately at the world beyond and his mouth set in a grim, implacable smirk, as though weighing the threat of his prey and dismissing it as nought. His hands are all that can be seen of his body, the skin showing ragged orange scars and decaying, burned flesh. Upon one finger a platinum ring gleams, a majestic kestrel of Great House d'Murani in flight, and on another a simple signet ring. Arrayed behind the impressive figure is a large black banner, rippling in the breeze, the cloth slashed with a line of vivid red. Upon the banner is a massive hawk-like kestrel, its wings spread wide and talons splayed as though in the act of the hunt.

  • This isn't really a painting (yet), but it was sketched out and it was sent to Manteekan so it exists:

    Manteekan, Father of Nightmares
Rendered in muted tints with sparse pops of color, the scene that unfolds before your eyes is one of terrible Wyrden beauty, blanketed beneath the spread of Mother Night's black embrace. Elder ravenwoods loom and cast shadows across the glade that dominates the piece, blotting out the argent light of Mother Moon as it seeks to cast its gentle radiance upon the lurking fog that coalesces beneath the canopy. There is a humanoid shape to the amorphous haze, and it boasts a twisting noose crafted of thick vine and thorned brambles about its ephemeral throat. Within the mist, two luminescent eyes of pale, icy blue reside, fixed upon the being it clutches within its spidery fingers: a pallid human of indeterminate gender, being fed a thick, shadowy concoction from a simple, jade bottle. At the feet of the ice-eyed mist sit nightmarish amalgamations of the races found across the Basin of Life, shadowy faelings and twisted mugwumps whispering sweetly into the ears of eager victims while horned taurians and feral loboshigaru rend unchanged enemies asunder upon a battlefield of blackened ice. The blood from this slaughter spills over a narrow ledge to pool beneath it, a sanguine waterfall bathing elegant script wrought in golden tints: Father of Change. The piece has been signed in the lower right corner, Stygian letters forming the name Ulalah Stormcrow.

These are inspiring! Beautiful work so far.

    And endless starless night

Here's two of my 'Drocilla is the Best and Everyone Else Sucks' collection:

'a blasphemous painting of Divine Triumph'

A heartwrenching tragedy to some and a soaring triumph to others, this painting has been placed within a frame of black iron. The stylised latticework of the metal curves in gentle spirals around the rectangular canvas, a strange mix between wisps of clouds and spiderweb. The cloth within portrays a long plain of wasteland, jades and emeralds used to pick out individual wisps of acidic gas escaping the ground. The eye is immediately drawn to the glowing form of Drocilla, the Enchantress, who stands over the fallen form of Isune, the Aesthete. The latter's eyes are wide in horror, staring blankly into space with a gaze that does not see, the rainbow of colours that was once within now a severe monochrome. The discolouration continues along the rest of Her body, stark shades of black and white colouring Her save for Her left hand, which is held feebly up towards the Goddess standing over Her. There, the last remnants of colour can be seen rising from Her hand to the waiting hand of the Sovereign as though they are the strings of a marionette doll. The Redolence of Ruin seems to glow even more than usual, Her tawny skin emitting a golden radiance that is almost painful to look at, the aureolate flesh vibrant with all the colour She has stolen from the Falcon below Her feet. Above Them, the last vestiges of dawn vanish on the eastern horizon, defeated before it can even rise by the nocturnal palette of dusk. Silvery stars gleam brightly in their triumph amidst the indigo and violet swirls within, Aapex and Eroi glowing twice as brightly amidst the whorls of galaxies and star systems now visible.

'a silken tapestry of a victorious Divine'

Striking in not only context but beauty, the august form of Drocilla, the Enchantress stands over the fallen and defeated form of Lisaera, the Silver Goddess. The golden glow that surrounds the Enchantress glitters faintly, the golden thread woven in Her hair and around Her tawny skin catching at any and all possible light, seeming to drain the colour from Her surroundings. Indeed, the broken form of Lisaera, Her neck twisted at an unsightly angle and the golden ichor of god's blood dripping from Her gaping mouth, and a gaping hole in her chest, seems to pale in comparison to the striking figure standing above Her. Patches of pale silver have been woven into the thread about Her hands to represent dying motes of moonfire, the feeble magicks having proven ineffective against Her nemesis. The backdrop of this masterpiece is darkest at indigo but pales to a faint gold near the top, save the paler tones surrounding Drocilla, the striking image of a nighthawk in flight over Her right shoulder visible against the dusken sky. The Enchantress' face, while ever a visage of utter grace and beauty, is twisted in a cold sneer as She takes in the vanquished Goddess lying at Her feet. Or perhaps She is staring at Her hands, the finger talons dripping with the same golden ichor that escapes Lisaera's mouth and drips from the void in Her chest.

PS. How great are custom/manse-made paintings? The creativity of everything I've seen done is amazing. One day I hope we'll be able to move custom paintings from a semi hack to an actual skill in Arts.

    How about something like this?

    Skillset:                      Skill: None

Problem: Right now, the only way to create custom paintings is to "cheat" the system by reworking an aether room to look like a painting and then paint a landscape.  It would be nice to actually be able to just make a custom painting without feeling that it is quite as awkward from an IC-standpoint.

Solution #1: Add a new option to Arts, SuperiorPaintings.  This will allow you to work with a blank painting.  You can edit its description, and edit its extended description.  The extended description will put you in the editor (like a manse room).  Finally, add a "sign" command that will "lock" the painting into its final form (this will allow you to work with your painting until it is to your satisfaction until it looks just the way you want it, and then it can't be changed any more).  Until it is finished, have the word "(DRAFT)" at the beginning of the extended description, to make it obvious it's still in progress.
Solution #2: Add an easel in Artisan.  A person would need to be in a room with an easel in order to draw a superior painting (but since it is furniture, one could actually place these in organizations, or have an arts room, etc).
Solution #3: There is an artifact that allows writing when not at a desk.  Allow this artifact to also be used for superior paintings when not at an easel.

    ----

If people have ideas / adjustments I'm willing to accept them, but it seems better to keep the actual function much the way it is (with the editor) and allowing a person to tweak & adjust the painting until it's finished and exactly the way that they want it to be.

  • How far in the skillset would that be? >_>

Admin discretion, we (or at least I) don't generally suggest that.  But my guess is that it would be somewhere around Landscapes (because that's what is currently required for the existing functionality).

I'm a fan of 1& 2 together. The draft part of 1 might be needless difficulty, I understand why it would be desirable but having it work like letters would no doubt be faster/easier to code. I like 2 for portraits, landscapes, and superior paintings actually, carry an easel made by an Artisan and set it up and then down when done.

Lets not derail @Zoku's lovely thread though. If people would like to discuss this further we could start a thread.

    Contribution:

    Streets on a Bloodfaire Night
Set in a dark iron frame, this painting of a cobble-stoned street seems to have a looming presence. The painting had been artfully done from near the cobbles of the street, which starts from the bottom of the canvas to the middle, before a fog takes it. The stones of the road are of different sizes, but are roughly the same shape. On either side of the street, starting a bit along the side of the painting and following the straight street's path, are sidewalks lined with ornamental lamps that have been painted with a dim yellow halo. The buildings on the street have been painted only enough to discern where one building starts and another ends. Within the gutters of the road and flowing in between the cobbles is dark red blood. Dripping from some of the street lamps and spattering the sidewalks is more blood from some great slaughter. In the centre of the painting, a great fog has been painted with heavy strokes. The fog is tinted a middling shade of red, as if the blood on the ground was in the air itself, and it consumes the road, sidewalks, and the buildings. The bloody fog ends a few inches before the top of the canvas, which is populated by a few white stars speckled through the dark blue sky herded by a brilliant off-white moon tinted a faint yellow-green.

Ellowyn found another of my paintings from the Bloodfaire in an old chat message!

    The Demon Lords and Lady
Set against the backdrop of Tainted Nil, the Unholy Five have been artistically portrayed by a reverent hand. Seated upon his throne, Luciphage dominates the centre of the portrait, his chiselled features calm and austere, one hand resting atop a sinister sceptre. To his side stands the Queen, lips curved in a cruel and seductive smile. She is a vision of great beauty, dark hair flowing like silk over her shapely shoulders, her feminine figure draped in elaborate silks. Lord Ashtorath stands to the other side of the Supreme Master, his face alive with palpable rage and gaze turned towards the lovely Nifilhema. His hands are clenched into fists, knuckles white with the tight grip, stark against the sombre black of his robes. Beyond the shoulder of Ashtorath oozes Gorgulu, a largely indeterminate blob of a man. His maw gapes, wide and hungry, and several tentacles can be seen snaking around the base of the throne. Shrouded in shadow by Nifilhema stands another figure, features indiscernible. Only the tome held in his hands reveals his hands as Baalphegar, his appearance one of his myriad of kept secrets. Before them kneel many twisted creatures, imps and fiends and malevolent demons, all grovelling before their tainted masters.
