Question for All Orgs: What are some professions/occupations?

Hello everyone,

I'm currently looking into what various professions/occupations/social classes may be found in each org. For example, I have for Magnagora:

pariah
noble
scientist
painter/sculptor
priestess
lamplighter
soldier
merchant
beggar/urchin

But other orgs I'm still not too familiar with or struggling to come up with choices, so I'm enlisting everyone now for your help. I will still take suggestions for Mag as well, there could be something I missed! Please, if possible, include a small description of what the occupation is if the meaning is not inherently clear.

Also, just listing the in-game player trades and classes doesn't really work for me. I'm looking for that Goldilocks sweet spot where an occupation is unique but not overly specific. For example - "priestess" would be okay, but not "Priestess of the Bloody Talon."

Thanks for any help in advance!

  • I think you'll find a lot of possible overlap between different factions, and maybe would want to consider a descriptor (a Priestess of Ashtaroth, for example) so you could have room for a Moon Priest from Serenwilde, also for example!

Some Serenwilde-esque ideas might be, absent descriptors:

    A priestess
    A gardener
    An herbalist
    A trapper
An Oracle or Seer (Sowers and Listeners both have this heavily going on in very different ways)
A chieftain, maybe, for something Wodewose flavored
    A ranger
A hunter (not like bashing, but more in having your hunting horn, stalking prey, etc)

  • Hallifax has a lot of professions, but they all tend to work towards the same goal (and really, that's Hallifax's rp anyway). From the artists and scientists on top of the castes, to the merchants and warriors in the middle castes, and the servants and delivery personnel, each group works together to support the whole system. Perhaps a pigeon extraction specialist who keeps the walkways clean of detritus to allow a steady path for others going about their work, or a jeweler trained specifically to hunt through piles of gemstones to pick that very special, perfectly cut one to add to a sculpture. You might also find a hue inspection auditor whose job is to make sure each gemstone in that sculpture is the same exact hue, or musicians whose sole responsibility is playing soothing and/or invigorating music to inspire the sculpters/scientists.
Her voice firm and commanding, Terentia, the Even Bladed says to you, "You have kept your oath to Me, Parhelion. You have sworn to maintain Justice in these troubled times."

Yet if a boon be granted me, unworthy as I am, let it be for a steady hand with a clear eye and a fury most inflaming.
  • On Magnagora you left out serf/laborer. There's lots of nameless cogs to keep the Engine running.
  • Every org has ministers, but the word minister itself seems Hallifaxian more than it does any other org. Maybe it's the 1984 ministries guiding that association for me though :D

Gaudiguch has labourers around all the time lately, like the ones that built our library extension and are currently, supposedly, patching up our roads. We have initiates of meditation whose job it is to...well, meditate, seek enlightenment and get up to bratty hijinks along the way. The Palace of course is fully staffed with courtesans who cover the broad strokes of entertainment: music, dance, escort, wine and dine, everything a casino and pleasure den needs. The Eyrie Roost is a hangout for common stablehands as well as beastmasters, whose craft was passed down by the dwellers on Zoaka. Assumedly there are fleshcrafters who tend to the Menagerie, and "scientists" (also fleshcrafters) that work in the Laboratory of Mu. The bazaar is also packed full with merchants, hawkers and likely fencers.

  • Could sage work for Gaudiguch as well, along those themes of Enlightenment?

  • Glomdoring doesn't really have roles or duties the same way other orgs do, in my experience, but I'd say similar to Lief's Serenwilde list, with obvious aesthetic differences. I'd also add sentinel or guardian (Thornwatch), warrior, healer, diviner, ritualist, or mystic (last two are actual npcs).

Some more generic roles might include shopkeep, cook (or any variation; baker, etc), artisan (as the actual skill or something more specific like a potter or glassblower), painter, actor, director, writer, poet, playwright, dancer (exotic and not), teacher or professor, inventor, medic or doctor, scribe, tailor, blacksmith, storyteller, or florist.

Some more exotic roles might be lamp-lighter (or torch-lighter or similar), bloodletter, or jester/fool.

You could say that the Masters of the Temple are sages in their own right, but sagacity is subjective. My IC opinion is that they just really like mad-libs and cactus weed :p

Edit: Oh, the dracnari dreamers are most definitely sages. While the Masters fulfill the role of leading meditations and enlightening pursuits, the dreamers are the ones with...well, the dreams, with which we fuel the Drachou and spur on revelation. Big sage energy!

I'm not sure that's a profession or occupation from a current member. And if anything at that point wouldn't they be considered a commodity?

So far, every org but Celest now. C'mon Celestines, I know you're out there. Share your input!
  • No.
I'm Lucidian. If I don't get pedantic every so often, I might explode.
  • More Seren things...

Historians/Archaeologists - mostly a Listener subset and by extension can ask the dead rather than just relying on theories, artifacts, etc.

With the nature of tribes and the like, titles such as Priest/ess (more Moonie) becomes more specific?
Something like Ritualist might be more generic but the title, afaik, tends to reflect on the nature of the connection between the group and a Spirit. Stag would have Shamans from memory, I feel like Bull wouldn't necessarily have an equivalent role (my understanding is he tends to be more clear and direct).

Kinda also flows on to other roles in Serenwilde, the tribal nature means you'd probably find most positions that exist in a tribe somewhere in the forest
  • I would not say 'ritualist' is specific for communes. Several people in cities (more specifically Gaudiguch) have used the title that I'm aware of. Not sure about priest(ess), which is also used for high-ranked people or NPCs in certain Orders.

(Unless that's not what you mean, Saran, then feel free to disregard.)

A few others that came up after, when I was thinking about this thread, were librarian, scholar, archivist, bookbinder, (literally all the trades), guard, and possibly cartographer.

Hmm, yeah no I didn't mean anything was Serenwilde specific but more that there's a general role of "Someone whose role is as a religious/spiritual guide/connection to the Wilde/one of the Spirits of the Wilde" and what term is used is kinda based on the Spirit and the group?

So, inside Serenwilde, Priest/ess just feels specific to me cause it immediately translates to that role in connection to Moon as part of the Coven.

But other groups with a similar role, even connected to Moon, might call it something different. For example, someone with the same role in a tribe connected to Moon might be a Shaman, Witch Doctor, Conduit, or some kinda poetic title (I've seen Howler at the Moon).

Ritualist is just the title/role that kinda comes to mind as more generic and encompassing for all those different permutations.

    I don't know what you're talking about.

367 HALP Hallifaxian Adoption a Active Daraius Hallifax
404              Ministry of Plenty     -             Vivet        Hallifax
420  MMA         Ministry of Marital Af -             Aramel       Hallifax
480  MOSAD       Ministry of Sanitation -             Shonjir      Hallifax
This post made me genuinely laugh but I can't hit "lol", so I'll hit "insightful" instead. :D

  • Oh, add arborist to that list - a caretaker of trees basically. Bowyer, linguist, herder (of deer, perhaps??), fishmonger (especially in NC/Mag), veterinarian, courier, lady-in-waiting or maid (most likely for the cities of Hallifax, NC, and Magnagora), negotiator/diplomat, pharmacist/apothecary, demonologist (though I suppose Nihilists are those by default), songwriter, silversmith, economist, tinkerer, chemist, archeologist, diver, surgeon... I could go on if need be.
