Purchaseable Race Ideas

So, people seem to think that the Gnome and Fink races are not worth their 500 credit price tag. So, I have two possible solutions. Firstly, to drop their price tag to 250 credits, and add more races. Or secondly, to retire them after a certain time, making them 'collectors' items, and thus worth more. In both cases, new races are needed.

Having spent most of my time in Serenwilde, I can only think of two candidates, who are both kinda linked to the forest - the Sileni and Centaurs. Centaurs have always been problematic due to the extra limbs...but...I'm not really sure why they can't be treated as a race with left and right legs, and just make those legs harder to damage (i.e. left legs/right legs. Only two wound tracks, not four). Like Finks and Gnomes, who have Demipowers linked to Aethercraft, these races are linked to Influencing and Beastmastery. So, here we go, my ideas:

Sileni - A spectral flobbergobble mushroom
1:      2/10 ego regeneration in all natural areas.
25:    Gain more esteem from influencing.
50:    Charming - Bonus to seduction and empowering ego attacks while influencing.
D0:   Natural Charisma - Doubles the effect CharismaticAura has on influencing.
D+:   ?

Centaur - A psychedelic flobbergobble mushroom
1:      Can’t ride beasts, but always count as being mounted. Can GALLOP.
25:    Legs take half wounds from physical weapons.
50:    Stargazer - 2/10 health and mana regeneration when outdoors at night.
D0:   The Beast Within - Can ingest beastmastery reagents, and learn and use beast powers. Cavaliers gain benefits of beast bond as if they were bonded to themselves.
D+:   ?

I thought all the existing Sileni remaining were spirits, and thus incapable of producing more offspring?

They are. But @Estarra mentioned that they were considering making them a playable race before they decided on gnomes and finks. So...I'm sure there is a way...

  • I like these ideas, I was similarly thinking about starting a thread about how it could be possible to gain the mushrooms in different ways, like the epics we have for each org. I think this is really neat!
The apple is cold, crisp, and sour as the juices fill your mouth. As you consume the fruit, you glimpse, for a moment, a massive, shadowy figure, Her snow-white hair framing a perfect, icy-eyed visage. Beneath you, a vast, perfect web of silken strands lies - and, for a moment, you realize that you too are part of it, weaver and strand both - and home.

I can almost promise you that centaur won't be playable, what with having to track injuries on four legs and so on.
Everiine said: The reason population is low isn't because there are too many orgs. It's because so many facets of the game are outright broken and protected by those who benefit from it being that way. An overabundance of gimmicks (including game-breaking ones), artifacts that destroy any concept of balance, blatant pay-to-win features, and an obsession with convenience that makes few things actually worthwhile all contribute to the game's sad decline.

eh, they go from left/right leg to left/right leg.  Ever seen a horse with one crippled leg?  Same sort of thing, they're about as useless as a human with a crippled leg.  Not like dogs, who're awesome, and will hop around with three legs no problem.

That being said, half wounds to legs from physical weapons?  As a level 25 ability?  Lolnope.  Not even close to balanced.

I never understood the four leg thing as an argument against centaurs being playable. A horse with one or two broken front legs is not getting anywhere fast. You'd only need to account for the front legs, mechanically, same as a bipedal character.

@Shaddus I meant in my post, that, they would be treated as if they had two legs. And they get a perk that makes their legs harder to wound, because, they have extra legs.

We have undead that bleed and drown underwater. Why is that allowed for mechanical reasons, but no, we can't have centaurs unless we have four separate leg wound tracks.

@Tarkenton Well, suggest changes then. I'm not claiming my ideas are the best ever. Lolnope is unhelpful.

  • TarkentonTarkenton Traitor Bear
@Qistrel I apologize, wasn't trying to be unhelpful.  It wouldn't be even close to mechanically balanced due to how wounding currently interacts with knights and monks.  Stick a centaur in plate, and you can kiss getting anything beyond probably a medium leg aff as a warrior goodbye.  However, in the new warrior combat system with the wound levels and what not, there may still be a possibility.  Perhaps amend it to 1/2 wound charge/counter/whatever it's called in the new system, with a minimum of 1 wound always given.  That way, the mechanic doesn't completely cancel out warriors/monks, but still does allow for some defensive power. That being said, at level 25, I don't see that happening.  Compared to the other level 25 perks, it's just way too strong.  Likely would pop that to demi, the current demi to demi+.  Likely something more like

1:       Stargazer - 2/10 health and mana regeneration when outdoors at night.
25:    Can’t ride beasts, but always count as being mounted. Can GALLOP.
50:   Knighthood spec bonus with Cav.  Perhaps some cold/excoro dmp.
D0:   Legs take half wounds from physical weapons.
D+:  The Beast Within - Can ingest beastmastery reagents, and learn and use beast powers. Cavaliers gain benefits of beast bond as if they were bonded to themselves.

Darklings - A morbidly tainted inkcap mushroom
    Speak: Common, Furrikini
1:      1/4 excorable and cold resistance
    25:     2/4 magic resistance
    50:     See viscanti.
D:      Devolved - Can influence beasts akin to an ecologist and/or use unarmed attacks more effectively, and eat anything it can lift (though to no nutritional effect unless it can otherwise consume the object).
D+:     Gutter Gourmond - Restores a little health from anything it eats (on a balance), and consuming player corpses summons a leveled loyal denizen darkling (Magnagoran only, similar rules to raisedead)

She is a gibbering [specialized] darkling and...
    Deplorable - Nihilists
    Disciplined - Ur'Guard
    Dessicated - Geomancy/Geochem
    Dissonant - Necroscream

The thing is that you can target my legs while you're in the trees, but only if I'm up there looking at you. Even though my 'trunk' is still visible on the ground. Solution: I'm actually a tree with a face, arms, and legs sticking out of the trunk. The face, arms, and legs slide up and down the trunk as required.

That is a mechanical limitation really. I'd go with what makes RP sense outside of combat situations. Otherwise people in the trees would be unable to attack your gut or legs, and people on the ground would be unable to attack your arms or head. One could argue that the same limitation should apply for racial comparisons like faeling vs say igasho where the faeling would need double balance to attack the head of an igasho unless already hovering, in which case they'd also need to land first to attack legs or suffer increased balance cost too... etc.

I understand why it is, and am not complaining about it: It's just really funny to think about. Theoretically, other such 'impossible' races COULD go in, with similar requirements to suspend disbelief.
  • re: the centaur thing, it's made me wonder why faelings don't just hover when their legs are amputated.

Golem - A sentient golem construct akin to the ones found on Xyl.
    Speak: Common
1:      1/4 Cutting and Blunt. All golems have a 1/8 mana buff and a -1/8 ego malus.
25:     Golems who take the mage path are 10% faster at melding. These golems gain a racial title at Elementalism Specialisation based on their spec. (Frost Golem, Pyre Golem, et al.)
50:     Golems who take the mage path gain a 1/8 buff to their spec's damage type(s).
D:      A demigod golem earns essence with a 15% bonus and lose 15% less essence upon death.
D+:    Will of Xyl: A golem with this power randomly ignores magic damage, much like the Rune of Absorption but with Magical instead of Physical damage. Chance based on (current karma)/10, with a max of 10% chance of ignoring damage at 100% karma. Every time this happens gives the player a 1% boost to max mana, capping at 10% and lasting 24 hours.

  • Instead of half wounds on the centaur, why not do something equally impossible to code, and do 3/10 universal damage resistance on legs?
  • Not sure if it makes too much sense/how balanced it would be, but could they have permanent stance legs?
Still affected by things that impact stances but they'd also be able to stance to something else while keeping legs up.

Though potentially complicated, we could have a "Racial" field on clothing/armor to cover concerns about things not making sense.

Ahem, there are several things I wish to reply to so i'll just put them in 1 post:

    - Sileni, though technically no longer exist, were at one point being considered to be made a purchaseable race. Remember that any form of storyline could be added to make them playable. A cache of orbs holding sileni souls in them? Sileni souls released by injuring Zenos? etc. etc.

    - Remember that races have to be in some way shards from a God. Faeling, while not the shard of a specific god, are technically descendants of Elfenehoala, just mixed with fae.

    - When considering a race, I suggest taking in consideration the basic fundamentals of that race. Consider Sileni, I am not sure why it is being stated they would be forestrals..but something to note is that Sileni were splinted from Goddess whom still had her Voice, thus sileni are considered to be (or have been) the most powerful 'artistic' races, and had influence over...whatever the realm their voice was connected to. Should take that into consideration with suggestions.

    - Centaur leg issue isnt really a problem, but I personally dont see Centaurs as being all that interesting of a race, may just be me though. They do however have strong ties to astrology.

As for my own personal suggestions that could work for Sileni:

    - Charming Voice: Ability to CHARM a target in an adjacent room, beckoning them over with the power of their voice (resistances apply)
    - Artistic Heritage: Increased Ego and ego regeneration, doubled if Bard archetype
    - Scars of Zenos: Having been hunted down to near extinction at the hands of Zenos, Sileni have gained a natural resistance to excroable and psychic damage
    - Ancestral Extinction: With most of their race having been destroyed, Sileni have developed a fierce determination in the furthering of their existence and legacy. Upon reaching 50% of health, an aura of well-being will surround them, granting them a large boost to regeneration for 15 seconds.

charm to demi, extinction to 50, scars to 1 imo.

I basically put those up as suggestions themselves, and not in the levels they are gained. They were just brainstormed ideas really.
  • The funny thing is, we are told that 100s of the remaining Gods ended up splintering and several were later extinct (Most during when Kethuru enveloped Lusternia), but in history we have never really been given actual names, aside from Sileni. This meaning that at any time Estarra can bring up a new race that was one of the splintered that had always existed. Who knows how many races are currently outside the Basin..

At this point are there any fantasy races left that we don't have? :P

  • Hallifax has a project for reviving the Sileni race planned.

Regarding paid races, how does the admin feel about an extra perk (level 75) for said paid races? Don't think I've seen that mentioned as an idea, and while it shouldn't be anything horrifically unbalanced, it would give those races extra value beyond the non-paid races.

Granted, I will say, gunning with damage shift is awesome.

  • Paid races already have access to perks that simply would not exist on any other race and are only justified by the fact they are gated behind a paid race.

That is as much of an advantage as we will give to Finks, Gnomes and any other race that may come into existence through the same mechanics in future.

That's fine Baelor. Was just a suggestion of a bone to throw those feeling meh about their purchase. Like I said, I've gotten plenty of value out of my fink purchase. I'm happy with it. Damage shift turret with a borrowed crit rune, kiwi, and kirigami is nice.
