See title? I've always been an alt heavy sort of person, but I'm not sure, with item decay and all that, if its wise to have too many alts because I might get spread to thin, and come back to find myself penniless and with all my posessions rotted away to dust someday. So right now I'm sticking with one character, but I was wondering how many characters most Lusternia players on average have active at a time.

But on the other hand, lots of people I know in this game have a main character and at least an active alt that they can swap between for convenience. Maybe it's the class you always wanted to try? The 2nd most tempting guild out there, not as good as your main one, but it's still pretty alluring. You will find a lot of reasons to have alts and even -I- think the call is strong from certain orgs/roleplays.
I find Lusternia's IG economy relatively well-built, and that translates to this: You'll find yourself regularly spending on the consumables and things that decay IG to feed that economy. But also a huge portion of those expenditures will be on QoL items, such as enchantments, minor buffs, so they are easily avoidable. Curatives do not decay, as long as you keep them in your rift/liquidrift(Except cleanse enchantment), but your access to liquidrift are vials and vials are subject to decaying, unless you buy artifact ones. So that's something to consider while you purchase them, don't trust the market inventories as a general rule of thumb and always probe them before you buy. The vials' lifespan vary from 0 days to +/-104 IRL days(100 IG months), that's a really long time to not worry about things once you purchase.
And in my experiences, the overall upkeep is never a taxing effort for a single character and should be easily doable for a second, third, maybe fourth? The answer to how many more just depends on how much time and energy you've at hand. Good luck settling down in the game.

Also, we're all @Shaddus, of course.
Lots of people alt because they want to enjoy all kinds of RP. Other people alt to experience other skillsets, etc. It's a mixed bag, but alting is common enough that no one's scandalized if you have an alt. Just don't out other people's alts, don't be rude or presumptuous while you're alting, and try not to use alt knowledge for ill gotten gains. With that in mind, alt as much as you please!
