Remote Desktop

edited December 2012 in The Real World
I've been using Windows Mesh to connect remotely from the computer at my parents house to my computer at home while I'm there. Got a mail today about Microsoft shutting Mesh down though, so that'll stop being possible before too long... Does anyone have any other suggestions for programs that can enable me to connect remotely?

LogMeIn works (usually) and has the benefit of being free.

  • Looks good. Installed it, and was told I had a 30-day trial to Pro though, and it'd revert to Free afterwards. What are the differences between Pro and Free?

  • Ooh, just found the table of differences between the two. Rather more hidden away than it should be, but... yeah. Too bad Pro disabled the one function that I had planned on using other than Remote Desktop (i.e. file sharing). Sure, can be solved in other ways, but... it seemed like a really nice function :(

Yeah, there are a few nice little perks for the Pro version, but it is possible to live without them (or find ways around them, as you say).  Just being able to connect without installing and setting up a VPN is pretty nice.

Though I'm probably heading towards the VPN route myself, at some point, as far as dialing in to the office goes (the company currently has a LogMeIn Pro account that a few users can log into concurrently, which was established before we switched to domain control- we've got a VPN set up to connect to now, so might as well start trying to move people towards that.  Starting with me).

Everiine is a man, and is very manly. This MAN before you is so manly you might as well just gender bend right now, cause he's the manliest man that you ever did see. His manly shape has spurned many women and girlyer men to boughs of fainting. He stands before you in a manly manerific typical man-like outfit which is covered in his manly motto: "I am a man!"

Pony power all the way, yo. The more Brontaurs the better.

Looked through it, and it seems LogMeIn is the first pick for those as well... Looks promising all around. TeamViewer looks nice too, so if for some reason LogMeIn won't cooperate, I'll have a go at that one next.

  • I prefer TeamViewer (for helping others), though Chromes Remote Desktop is also looking good (less functionality though, might not work for some usecases).

Otherwise, TigerVNC is amazing. You might also want to check out Splashtop.
  • Ditto. I use TigerVNC. It's brilliant.
  • Hmm. I'll give TigerVNC a try as well. The big problem I see there is that I don't always have the IP-address readily available when I'm at my parents, but I could get that one through LogMeIn... so it'll have to do a better job than that one :D

  • Dynamic DNS is your friend here.

  • I was actually looking at DynDNS earlier, but I think they removed the free version of their service. no-ip.org seems to work though, so we'll see how well it works in practice. More and more keeps being added to the background tasks though, sigh.
