We appreciate this input but just wanted to say a few things. Devoting entirely to a defense overhaul just isn't something we're willing to do at this point. There are numerous factors that go into the decision on what we choose to do.
As was mentioned - focusing entirely on the defense overhaul would be rather time-consuming for the only real change being that defenses are now giving gmcp messages. It does make coding easier, sure, and it would enable things like SSC to work easier with defenses (which, if there are any major defenses that really need to be put into SSC, let me know, I thought all the big ones were already in there).
This is already something we're slowly moving through (as things come up, not with a concerted priority), and it's something that we will continue to work on.

The economy overhaul will involve a much wider array of admin (and likely players) both in how we dive deep into how things currently work, and how we plan/design things to work moving forward.

If you're starting over as a new character and specifically want to do well in PK/group combat, we have Ninjakari as still solid if you're able to get in touch with a friendly current Ninjakari who's skilled in it (Zagreus, Thalkros, Malarious), Axelord warriors (Necromancy ones like Melech do very well, but Axelord is overall currently a great warrior subtype), Researcher (or any Hallifax class if you're active with their PKers, as Hallifax classes have the best synergy overall in the game right now), or Bard of any type (though you will be targeted second after melders). Moondancers/Shadowdancers are also really good for combat, as well as Wyrdenwood/Wildewood if you're willing to become familiar with them; the city versions, 'chems, are not quite on the same tier.
Melders are always useful, but you may not get kills yourself with one. There are only a few classes that I think are still quite frustrating to play in combat, which are Celestine (subpar to Nihilist killstrats in Sacraments v. Necromancy, Celestialism still fine), Nunchaku (though I think Drastrath has been getting it fixed) and non-axelord warriors (particularly cavalier, who struggle with getting kills due to slow build of their kill method).

2) Make sure you're ready and that it's the right choice for you. There's nothing wrong with knowing that you want to apply, but waiting a bit longer, so that you've had time to do all the things you want. You have to sacrifice those connections you've made as a player to become an Ephemeral - and whilst you get some amazing new people around you in return, there's nothing wrong with deciding that it isn't something you want to do. It's better to do that and find other ways to fulfil the drive you have to be an Ephemeral than it is to come up and be unhappy.
3) I'd never really encountered Ephemerals as a player until Milo - so he's the one I will always remember most fondly. As someone who was simultaneously terrified of and delighted by interacting with Divine, then, it was lovely to get to RP with a being who was not quite that powerful. I got to be starstruck without being overwhelmed!
4) Trader Bob Vengeance. (Also, I remain very proud of some of the mural rooms in my Ephemeral area, but everything has now been trumped by the army of Bobs).

In order of activity (and this is probably just my opinion), Mag is at the top, then probably Gaudi, then maybe Glomdoring and Serenwilde. Celest and Hallifax are moderately active but seem to have an opposing activity during the day to the other groups.
Melders are always good, and the new melds are..well, different. Bards are still about the same, monks are pretty strong. Warriors and other classes are generally the same as when you were here.

I'm so glad to see these little God blogs come back to us. I spotted one when I came back in Lusternia ( It feels like forever ago) and I absolutely loved it. It's so important to remember that there are people behind the Divines and these provide a lovely little window into the people behind the characters. ♥

On the topic of economy stuff, I firmly believe that decay mechanics shouldn't be a driving force of the game economy. They're simply not fun, even if there's a very good reason for them to exist. (Preventing database bloat). There's a reason that people buy non-decay, or get magic item curios, get artifact vials, etc. It's not because it's cheaper (It most certainly is -not-) but because having to spend an hour or two every few months trying to figure out what you need to buy, and reconfiguring reflexes, linking your rift, etc, is really unenjoyable, and honestly a barrier to getting back into the game. While games where you have to periodically upgrade your gear were mentioned, like wow and final fantasy, it's a completely different dynamic in those games, where buying new stuff lets you tackle new challenges and do more content, and that's fun. Decay is not.

Making AC entirely functional out of the box (defense upkeep, stancing/parrying) would be helpful to new player retention and involvement more than any economy changes, which I feel is mostly for the sake of the people who are already well-invested?
