    I seem to recall it breaking spacing, and replacing certain characters with garbage, like ", ', and -.

    I always use Notepad to write my posts because Word tends to replace quotes with similar-but-not-the-same quotes (” instead of "). Same issue with single quotes and dashes, yes.

    You can disable "smart quotes" in Word (those are the ones you are having an issue with usually). There are some other characters in Word that can mess it up too, but those are the most common.
