One of my favorites, if not my favorite, was introduced to me about a year or so ago called fate/zero and I loved it since I'm also a huge history nerd.

I'm guessing that Fate/Zero didn't have any scenes with "we must have sex now, because magic" like Fate/stay night, then? Those bits were so shoehorned in, it felt hilariously out of place. I'm not opposed to that sort of content (I mean, I was playing Fate/stay night, let's be real here) but it felt so forced, hah. I don't remember much about the anime though, so I can't remember if that bit was taken out entirely or just toned down for it.

There is a huge amount of anime that isn't moe based at all, or intentionally lampshades/subverts moe. Like Madoka.

Fate/Zero is cool, but is a little dicey on that front. It's based off a series of dating sim esque games. Still cool. Watch Bokurano. Or uh... Shinsekai Yori.

No. I watched fate/stay night after zero and was so, so, so disappointed. Apparently stay night came before zero. Zero is just good and doesn't have any of that harem garbage that stay night did.

Zero was made after stay night, but comes chronologically before it.

The thing about that is that amusingly, the guy who wrote it needed art for his VN (what it originally was), and the artist was a porn artist.

So he said, 'unless you write scenes where I can draw these characters fucking I'm not doing your game.'

    Therefore...

Yeah, I didn't like the anime for Fate/stay night much. I did enjoy the VN, though! I do think it would have been better without the H-scenes, however, as they didn't feel like they added anything to the story. But since you enjoy the setting I would recommend it, if the existence of those scenes isn't completely off-putting. Maybe there's a censored version floating around out there or something, I dunno.

Some backstory: So I generally despise anime because I think they're obvious attempts at selling sex and what not. Many are just overly perverted and have shallow stories. However, there are few that I grew up and absolutely adored like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, among others. I just want a story and some character development with some grittiness mixed in. Basically, an adult cartoon. One of my favorites, if not my favorite, was introduced to me about a year or so ago called fate/zero and I loved it since I'm also a huge history nerd. It was also incredibly gritty, had an excellent anti-hero protagonist, and the writing was top notch. Same with another one called Psychopass. I generally like the dark and gritty ones.

So, a friend of mine is like, "You should try Madoka Magica". I look at it and I'm like, "This seems like it's completely cutesy and dumb." I had nothing better to do and I watched it and about two episodes in, it got dark incredibly quickly and I was pleasantly surprised by it. Also, since I'm also a giant music nerd regardless of the source, I enjoyed it massively as the music was pretty top-notch (I'm a sucker for cellos and gregorian chant, especially if there's a rock element mixed in). I've learned that anything written by Gen Urobuchi is going to generally be automatically liked by me. He wrote fate/zero, Psychopass, and Madoka Magica. I'm tempted to give his other stuff a shot.
Thanks for this. We might have similar taste! Whenever I care to watch anime again, I'm going to have to give that one a look.

Cowboy Bebop and Trigun are great. What do you think of Outlaw Star?

EDIT: I'm not a fan of any anime that drags on forever, especially when 90% of it is just filler. Some though, just have a story to tell, and do it in 30 or so shows. Those are usually ok.

Did...Did Unlimited Blade Works just carve the harem aspect out or something? Like there were traces of it in the first few episodes, but once the Command Seals started flying that plot seemed to die a fiery death in favour of Noble Phantasms and Heroic Spirits breaking the rules.

The original anime run follows the Fate route, which I think is the most boring one, and thus probably most prone to focusing on wanting to kiss Saber's butt. Unlimited Blade Works is a separate route in which more interesting things actually happen.

She comes from a side story sort of thing within the same universe.

The Fate route anime didn't really do that route justice, considering it was the first attempt to make a series based off it. Once another studio (UFOtable) took it on, you'll see that the quality went way up, which is why people generally enjoyed the Zero / UBW adaptations more (the fight scenes were pretty amazing, especially the last one in UBW). They''re also doing a movie based off the third route in the series, so I'm pretty amped to see that as well.

You guys are missing out on One Punch Man still.

Since it I didn't see it mentioned around here otherwise, I'd recommend Baccano to the both of you based on what's been discussed.
  • The TypeMoon franchise (Fate/Stay Night specifically) actually started out as an indie game, and indie games in japan usually have to sell certain scenes to make it. That, and possibly there were creator preferences mixed in there.

I mean, a female Arthur. Why would you make a female Arthur except to...

The story and the background and the premise were big and encompassing enough, however, that people actually liked the parts of the game that were not of that nature. Ironically, it helped that those scenes are well known as being amongst the most badly done in that genre. It got big enough that it received an anime adaptation over a decade ago, and then got ported over to PS2 with big name voice actors and actresses doing full voice-overs (the original didn't have much voice acting at all) and the removal of the questionable scenes in the PS2 port. Then it started spawning the stuff franchises in Japan spawn, like sequels and prequels.

The Fate/Stay Night (and Fate/Zero) universe resides in the mind of the main storyboard writer for the group, and it's therefore collectively called the Nasu-verse (dude calls himself Nasu, after the japanese name for eggplant). In the Nasu-verse, the Fate/Stay Night story is a small distraction in the grand scheme of things. If you're interested, there're a series of movies that is situated in the larger Nasu-verse called the Kara no Kyoukai films, which deal with the same kinds of concepts. It's a very different plot, but it has the same dark and gritty style and colour (because it's made by the same studio) as the Fate/Zero and the more recent UBW remake.

I'm still waiting for the Tsukihime anime (also from the same Nasu-verse) to be remade - don't bother with what's out there right now for this one, though. It's sadly even worse than the first F/SN anime.

The short version: turns out that creating an entire population with the ability to manipulate the world with their mind leads to needing absurd amounts of control over the population to prevent everything from going horribly. Here's some people slowly learning this as they age from adolescents to adults. Also, Squealer wasn't wrong.

Re: what I'm currently watching, just finished up darker than black s1. Fully prepared to be disappointed by s2.

Everything Kalnid said. It's terrifying because it feels like a world that would actually happen exactly as the story plays out.

As a bonus: really great female protagonist! Inclusion of homosexual relationships! Storylines that have higher stakes than 'who do I love and why'! An ending that will linger in your brain forever and ever and you can't erase the haunting of it. (or maybe just me?)

  • Shin Sekai Yori pulled off the "vague sense of unease" thing so very well.

It also had top-notch voice acting.

  • Hmm. Thanks for the responses @Kalnid, @Sylandra and @Lerad.  Seems more speculative sci fi.

@Grench sold me on Cowboy Bebop (movie) even though I had criticisms of some of it (scenes, plot-why does everything always have to slant to the mystical in fucking anime? Why is there no hard scifi?)

Anime wise I used to be a big Digimon fan when I was younger. Then it switched to Hellsing when I was a teen...I still remember secretly recording the episodes when they ran at night because it was FSK 18 (I thinks that's like your A rating) and I was 15 back then. Eventually, my mum found out and hid the tapes, claiming that she'd return them when I turned 18. Hasn't happened till today because she misplaced them and we moved in the meantime....I am so glad for the internet.
Nowadays, my favourites are Fullmetal Alchemist (though I haven't watched Brotherhood yet), .hack//SIGN (I just love the story) and El Cazador de la Bruja (the OST is amazing). Occasionally, I also watch some episodes of Detective Conan.

Edit: how can I get rid off this white bar?

  • edited January 2016
El Cazador, that's a nostalgic title. One of the best (in my opinion) classic adventure shows that gripped the anime industry in the new century.

And it's a weird coincidence you mentioned the OST of that show, because the music producer/composer behind that is considered amongst the best in that line of work, and is also famously credited for her work on the soundtrack of the Fate/Zero, F/SN and Madoka, which we were just talking about a few posts up. Not to mention being the mastermind behind the Kalafina group and their songs, and whose reach has touched many of the major high-budget shows of the last few years.

  • I've been watching some classic comedies recently. It Happened One Night with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert; The Philadelphia Story with Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart and Katherine Hepburn; My Man Godfrey with William Powell and Carole Lombard; and His Girl Friday with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russel. These are all fantastic movies with fantastic actors being fantastic. I mean, Cary Grant is just so... Cary Grant. He's wonderful. Women want him, and men want to be him. Not that anyone else is slacking off. They're film legends for a reason.

But even acting aside, these movies are damn funny. There's a bit of datedness to some of it, like the casual sexism (It Happened One Night is very emphatic that a woman's place is being beaten by men lest they get spoiled), but past that it's just incredibly talented actors throwing out jokes like they're going out of style. His Girl Friday never even stops to take a breath.

Now I just need to find what to move on to next. I might keep on with Cary for a while <3
The purpose of writing is to inflate weak ideas, obscure pure reasoning, and inhibit clarity. With a little practice, writing can be an intimidating and impenetrable fog!
  • If you want a culture shock watch the 1970s spy movie Three Days of the Condor (Robert Redford, Max Von Sydow, Fay Dunaway). The plot unfolding (audience is third person omniscient) and pacing are certainly from a different time. The male/female accepted interactions even made me raise an eyebrow and say "Whoa." Also you get to cackle at the 1970s futuristic version of mapquest. I picked it up because the 2015 Captain America movie was supposedly based on it. You can see parallels.
