  • I've been bitching a lot about my new supervisor lately.  Well, today I found out this little awesome snippet of amazingness.

She was hired because she's retired.

Not only has she been good friends with the director for years, but they only have to pay her half of what they'd normally be paying someone.  If she was actually getting paid properly, she'd lose her social security income.

Go figure.  You know, you kinda get what you pay for.

Low ceilings in the work place (read 3ft tall) should be banned in areas you're expected to do heavy lifting.

Having solid wood beams stick out of said low ceiling is taking the piss.

If workplaces insist on having such places, they should replace the floor with crash mats so when you knock yourself out, it's at least a comfortable landing.

Do you really mean 3 feet tall?

I would not even be able to knock myself out on that ceiling due to not being able to get in in the first place... and I am rather short to begin with.

That is not even counting the wooden beams which would make even crawling in difficult. Certainly no room for lifting while on one's belly, and if your employer expects you to work laying down you might want to seek a new job.

It's a slanted roof, the stuff I was lifting is in the corner.

  • I got all my hair chopped off today. Went from 6-7 inches to 3/4 of a centimeter.

Pro: I feel so much better with short hair and it dries instantly.
Con: As I do EVERY time after I get a haircut I used entirely too much shampoo and it was just gooey unlathered shampoo. Woe.

I don't believe this is the first time I've complained about this, yet I fail to learn.

Hey, I've been first hand witness to it, the world is getting too easy and on demand, just look at something as basic as video gaming these days. Effort? Work? Ability? Learning from your mistakes and practising so you get better? Sod that, dumb it all down and give everyone a free ride to the end credits.

People complain now if something is too difficult, and that all content should be immediately open to them because "I paid for this."

I paid for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening back in 1996, I didn't bitch and moan that it took me the better part of 2 years to complete, ok I complained about that bastard Water Temple in Ocarina of Time a few years later, but that was due to poor design, not the fact I couldn't immediately complete it, seriously though, who didn't have some measure of loathing for it*?

These days you look at games and the ridiculous nature of some, where it even gets to a point of "Ok so you've died 10 times, want to skip this level/have a super powerful boost?" because people complain they can't rush to the end credits, and then demand a new title which leads to studios releasing under developed rehash sequels where the biggest change is the number on the box cover.

I swear at times I'm 27 going on 70, but there's just little examples I see everywhere of things becoming dumbed down and too easy, like maths exams in schools that let you use a calculator for basic long multiplication/division. What happened to working answers out on scrap paper?

*Because someone is likely to go "I liked the Water Temple" you're probably the same type of person who owned and enjoyed Superman 64, you strange twisted being you.

To be fair, this is exactly what the generation before us said about us, and what the generation before them said about them. It's a never-ending cycle.
Everiine is a man, and is very manly. This MAN before you is so manly you might as well just gender bend right now, cause he's the manliest man that you ever did see. His manly shape has spurned many women and girlyer men to boughs of fainting. He stands before you in a manly manerific typical man-like outfit which is covered in his manly motto: "I am a man!"

The 21st century, that's what happened. The key to maths is nothing to do with mental arithmetic and everything with understanding the structure of the logical steps required to reach the correct answer. If you're trying to integrate trigonometric functions, or work out probabilities of events given a certain distribution, then basic arithmetic is of very little use - and the time saved by using a calculator on trivial calculations can be much better spent testing more advanced mathematical skills.

That's why you have two papers for maths exams, at least GCSE papers are in England. One is (or was) for mental arithmatic with basic area/volume of a square/rectangle questions, the other is your trigonometry/pi to more than 3.142 paper. The latter you had the calculator for, the former you were expected to work out and show your working out, it's even in the exam's allocated time allowance.

You now get the calculator in both papers, when the entire point of the first one was to demonstrate the capacity to calculate in mental arithmatic. The age of computers is not justification for forgetting a key skill, because there's always scenarios where technology is either unavailable or not functioning (and as someone who works volunteer hours for a charity shop, I've seen my fair share of broken down tills.)

Agree with this on SO many levels, Mork.  You can't expect to always have access to a calculator or a computer at every moment of the day, I know that at work I often have to do calculations on the fly while dealing with several customers, I don't have time to walk out back, punch the equation into the calculator and walk back, instead I quickly work it out in my head on a piece of paper, which is just as fast.

EDIT: and before anyone asks why I don't just take the calculator out the front with me, it is one of those really old ones that has a roll of paper in it and gets plugged into an AC adaptor.

EDIT2: Also regarding your comment about the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time, personally I thought the complaints about it were blown out of proportion, I had minimal trouble with it when I played it years ago, but back then I was also a smart-ass =p
Never put passion before principle.  Even if you win, you lose.

If olive oil comes from olives, where does baby oil come from?

If vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?
  • While I agree with the principle that people should learn to do math, the truth of the matter is that most people will carry a calculator (and possibly quite a bit more) with them at all times. After all, I don't think there's a single cellphone sold nowadays that doesn't include one...

@Shachar has it right, the emphasis (in higher learning, at least) has generally moved on to spending more time actually learning the principles and concepts the math represents, instead of wasting time teaching everyone how to use a slide rule or logs table. It's reasonable for everyone to understand and be able to do basic manual mathematics, not so reasonable to demand that it be demonstrated at every turn. By the time you're graduating highschool and doing your final tests and certificates, you should have long ago demonstrated you can multiply/divide arbitrarily high (or low) simple numbers with sufficient time, I don't really see any reason tests like the GSCE or SAT/ACT tests (which are timed) should penalize or reward you for learning math tricks to speed mental arithmetic.

Yeah when we did our GSCE equivalent, we didn't have calculators either, and calculators only popped in during college courses when we actually needed them for things like trig, stats and calculus.

I agree with you completely in needing to be able to do mental arithmetic and hope it doesn't become a lost skill. Fa too often you see highschool graduates who are completely stumped when asked to do a simple multiplication or subtraction/addition problem without a calculator. Heck, there was even a column in our newspaper about a case where someone in a store had trouble working out how much change to give back because the machine wasn't working...

Not to detract from the debate, because I like the discussion of necessity of manual actions that are perceived to be old fashioned in an ever modernising technological world, I do need to go back to this.

The Water Temple was great in theory but poorly executed, the triple level system and multiple exits that looked so similar you couldn't remember if that's the one to the floor you bombed, the one with the block or... "no wait I just left the entire dungeon" visuals made it exceptionally easy to be lost in, everyone also seems to get stuck at the exact same moment, where you're lacking that one key for the mirror Link fight for the longshot. I've seen poor game design time and again over the years, WoW boss fights (looking at you Princess Huhuran), the final level in Strike Suit Zero (which goes against everything you learned in the game about piloting and combat to be a goddamn rail roaded tunnel flyer) escort missions in just about every game ever (STOP MAKING THESE WHEN YOU CAN'T DESIGN SMART AI) and then you have water levels.

And when a water level is determined to be frustrating, the critical par that it's judged against is the Water Temple, because ugh, that f##king key. The reworked version for the 3DS is probably too well worked that it's now seriously easy, yet the Master Dungeon version was more challenging gameplay wise and less dumb "repeat every step 3 times over and still manage to miss the obscure exit".
