I highly doubt they're random. During the event, we had someone disguised as one of our own sneak in and put a few on at least me, if not other people. It happened at an earlier meeting, too. No demesne is required. Just someone to sneak in unnoticed, slap the thoughtstealer on, and get out before getting caught.

Thoughtstealers can be cast at anyone in the local area. They don't need to be in the room or melded.
Critique removes them, as can someone else with illusions and enough skill.

People who can use mask cannot use thoughtstealer, nor can people who can use glamour.
